FAQs

What makes this 4-inch Ganesha eco-friendly?

This Ganesha is shaped from natural clay and finished with water-soluble, non-toxic colours, no Plaster of Paris, no chemical paint, no glitter, or synthetic adhesive. When you place the murti in water for visarjan, it returns to soil rather than settling as residue in a lake or river.
Every part of the idol is meant to dissolve, which is what allows you to complete visarjan respectfully at home in a bucket or a tub, without a trip to a water body.

Which clay is this Ganpati murti made from?

It is made from shadu mati, the soft riverbed clay traditionally used by murtikars across Maharashtra and Gujarat for Ganesh Chaturthi. Shadu mati is chosen for two reasons: it holds fine detail beautifully, and it breaks down completely in plain water within a short time.
Because it is a natural clay, tiny variations in shade and surface texture are normal, and each murti carries small differences from the hands that shaped it.

How is a clay Ganesha different from a Plaster of Paris idol?

Clay dissolves in water in minutes to a few hours. Plaster of Paris does not dissolve; it can remain in a water body for a very long time, and the paints used on POP idols often carry heavy metals.
For your puja at home, the difference is practical too: a shadu mati murti of this size can be immersed in a bucket in your own home, while a POP idol needs to be taken to a designated immersion point.

Is a 4 inch Ganesha idol the right size for home puja?

Yes, A 4 inch murti is one of the most practical sizes for an Indian home it sits comfortably in a mandir shelf, a pooja thali, a small decorated chowki, or a corner of a studio apartment.
It is also the easiest size to manage for home visarjan, since a standard bucket of water is more than enough. Families celebrating in flats, students living away from home, and first-time celebrants usually find this size the most comfortable to begin with.

Which side is the trunk turned to, and what does it mean?

This murti has the trunk turned towards the left, the vamavarti form. Vamavarti Ganesha is the form traditionally invited into homes for daily worship and for Ganesh Chaturthi, as it is associated with saumya, gentle blessings, and is easy to worship with simple daily rituals.
The right-turned form, dakshinavarti, is followed with stricter niyamas and is more commonly installed in temples.

Where should I place the Ganesha idol at home, and in which direction?

Place the murti so that Ganpati faces north or east, which usually means installing him along the north-east corner of your home the ishaan kon. The north-east is considered the most auspicious direction for a home mandir.
Keep the idol slightly raised on a chowki or wooden platform rather than directly on the floor, keep the space around it clean, and avoid placing it directly under a staircase or against a wall shared with a bathroom.

Can I keep this Ganesha on my office desk or car dashboard?

Yes, at 4 inches it fits a work desk, a study table, or a reception counter easily, and it is a popular choice as a Ganesh Chaturthi gift for colleagues and clients.
In an office, face the murti towards the north or east wherever the layout allows. A bedroom is generally avoided for a mandir, though a small murti placed respectfully on a clean shelf is widely accepted. For a car dashboard, do keep in mind that this is an unfired clay murti; it is best suited to indoor placement, away from direct sun and moisture.

How do I tie a dhoti and decorate a small 4-inch murti?

Use a small piece of soft cotton or silk cloth, roughly 8 to 10 inches wide. Wrap it around the waist of the murti, make two or three gentle pleats at the front, and tuck the ends in. A thin thread or a fine mauli tied at the waist holds everything in place without any pins.
Finish with a small mauli around the wrist, a tiny chandan tilak, and fresh durva grass. Because the idol is unfired clay, keep the cloth dry and handle the murti with both hands while dressing it.

How many days should Ganpati stay at home?

Families follow the tradition passed down in their own ghar dedh din (one and a half days), three days, five days, seven days, or the full ten days ending on Anant Chaturdashi. All of these are equally correct; what matters is that the sankalp you take at sthapana is the one you complete.
If this is your first Ganesh Chaturthi at home, one and a half days or three days is a gentle way to begin, and you can extend in the years that follow.

Can I do Ganpati visarjan at home with this idol?

Yes, this murti is made for it. Take a clean bucket, tub, or large steel vessel and fill it with fresh water. Perform the aarti and the uttar puja, ask Ganpati for kshama for any lapses in seva, and gently lower the murti into the water with both hands.
Offer a few durva, flowers, and a spoon of the naivedya into the water as you would at a ghat, and say your Ganpati Bappa Morya. Let the murti rest undisturbed until it settles into the water on its own; do not break it up with your hands.

How long does the idol take to dissolve, and what do I do with the water afterwards?

A 4-inch Shadu Mati murti usually begins softening within minutes and settles fully over a few hours. Leaving it overnight is perfectly fine.
Once the clay has settled, pour the water and the soft clay into the soil of a tulsi plant, a garden bed, or a large potted plant at home. This is the most beautiful part of an eco-friendly visarjan: the mitti that carried your Ganpati this year goes on to hold a living plant. Avoid pouring it into the drain or the kitchen sink.
